Kaarale Andreassen made this drawing of an East Greenlandic myth with pen and ink on paper. Look at how the hatching marks define the planes of the figure's face and clothing, and the slope behind. You can almost feel the scratch of the pen digging into the page. Andreassen creates a sense of volume and depth through the density and direction of his lines. Notice the dark area between the figure's arms and torso, which gives the figure a strong sense of presence. The marks on the landscape behind, while less dense, feel like they are part of the same language. This reminds me of Marsden Hartley's drawings, where simple lines carry a lot of emotional weight. Art, like the myths it depicts, is a conversation across time. It invites us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the story.
