This photograph captures the Pfeiferbrunnen fountain in Bern, with the Käfigturm in the background, though we don’t know when it was made or who took it. It shows a commitment to capturing the physical world. Look at the cobblestone street, each stone a slightly different shade, laid out in seemingly haphazard, yet orderly, fashion. The photographer probably didn’t have much to work with in the way of technology, so it's really a testament to their focus. I’m drawn to the figures, slightly blurred, on the street, ghostly and anonymous. It reminds me a little bit of Atget's photographs of Paris - anonymous and yet very specific. Photography is an ongoing conversation; this image reminds us that art is an exchange of ideas across time and reminds us to embrace ambiguity.
