Editor: This is Dodge Macknight's watercolor, "Unfinished Sketches Done in Gorham, N.H. (Winter)." It's evocative, but the unfinished parts are distracting. What stories do you think it tells? Curator: This "unfinished" quality, perhaps unintentionally, opens up a dialogue about labor and representation. Who gets to be "finished," and whose labor remains unseen? The stark New Hampshire winter could be seen as a metaphor for marginalization. Editor: Marginalization, how so? I mostly saw it as pretty. Curator: Think about whose stories are told and whose are erased in idealized landscapes. Consider who benefits from this "prettiness" and who is excluded. Does the winter scene highlight any particular struggle or resilience? Editor: Hmm, I see what you mean. It's much more complex than I initially thought. Thanks for helping me look deeper. Curator: Absolutely, art is a mirror reflecting societal power dynamics. Understanding it is key.
