Here's a boat painted by Richard Eurich, adrift on dark, choppy seas. You can see the brushstrokes swirling, mirroring the motion of the water, thick with oil paint. I wonder, what was Eurich thinking as he painted this? Maybe he was caught up in the drama of the scene, imagining the boat's occupants clinging to life. Those folks are huddled together; the paint application almost seems to mimic their state of distress. I can almost feel the cold spray of the water. And what about the colors? They're muted, somber, all grays and blacks, reflecting the heavy mood. But then there’s a slash of red on the flag! What a defiant little gesture. I can imagine Eurich adding this, a final stroke to pull everything together. Painters are always talking to each other across time and space, and this piece makes me think of other artists, like Turner, who captured the power of the sea. Eurich's painting feels like a continuation of that conversation, a reminder of the raw, untamed forces that shape our world.
