The Meissen Manufactory produced this porcelain figure of an ‘Avvocato,’ or lawyer, sometime in the 18th century. During this period, European society was undergoing significant transformations, marked by the rise of the bourgeoisie and evolving social hierarchies. These figurines reflect the era's fascination with societal roles and perhaps, a subtle critique of the legal profession. Note the detailed, almost caricatured features and elaborate garb, adorned with floral decorations. This aesthetic choice could be interpreted as a commentary on the perceived opulence and theatricality associated with certain professions. The figure's identity as a lawyer invites reflection on power, justice, and the performance of social roles. Such pieces often served as decorative objects in aristocratic households, sparking conversations and perhaps gentle mockery of various social figures. They capture a moment in time, revealing both the aspirations and the anxieties of a society in flux.
