'Vue de Rinkenberg' was created by Charles Melchior Descourtis using etching and color aquatint, a popular printmaking technique of the late 18th century. The charm of aquatint lies in its ability to mimic the tonal gradations of watercolor. This was achieved by applying powdered resin to a metal plate, then using acid to etch around the particles, creating a textured surface that holds ink. Successive layers of etching and coloring would build up the image. The process demands a combination of technical skill and artistry. We can think about the labor involved in producing these prints; each one would have been carefully hand-colored. The prints could be sold at relatively affordable prices, widening access to landscape views among the rising middle classes. Considering the materials and the making of 'Vue de Rinkenberg' enriches our appreciation, and challenges any hierarchy between fine art and craft.
