Mauro Gandolfi created this pen and brown ink drawing called "A Sheet of Heads," sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century. This was a period when the academies were central to art production. Gandolfi was an Italian artist trained in the academic tradition. "A Sheet of Heads" reflects the kind of exercise that students would have undertaken. It is not so much a portrait of an actual person, but a study of different facial types, and how light and shadow fall on them. We can observe how the image creates meaning through the artist's control of line and tone. There are classical references in the laurel wreath and elaborate hairstyles. By mastering these techniques, artists could then produce convincing and affecting depictions, whether for religious, historical, or mythological paintings. Historians consult instructional manuals, biographies, and other period documents, to better understand how art was taught and made. This artwork reminds us that artistic skill is often the product of institutional training and careful study.
