These lace-up shoes in russet brown suede, trimmed with brown leather, were made by A. van Goethem. It's hard to say exactly when, but the cut and style suggest a certain period. What strikes me is the color. A kind of earthy brown, it reminds me of a landscape. The suede gives the surface a soft, almost painterly quality, like a watercolor wash. You can almost feel the nap of the material, that subtle texture that invites touch. And the laces, tied in a simple bow, have their own quiet presence. They speak to the act of dressing, of preparing to step out into the world. They are a reminder that art is not just about what we see but also about how we experience the everyday. Think of other shoemakers, like Salvatore Ferragamo, for instance, who also embraced the sculptural possibilities of footwear. Isn’t art just another form of conversation, an ongoing exchange across time and materials?
