This graphite drawing called Figurstudier, or Figure Studies, was made by Niels Larsen Stevns. Born in 1864, Stevns belonged to a generation of artists who came of age amidst significant social and political change, particularly regarding gender and class. This sketch, with its quickly rendered figures, captures a moment of observation, perhaps in a public space. The figures seem to blend together. Are they members of the bourgeoisie, or workers? Stevns was deeply engaged in social issues. He was raised in a humble background and often depicted biblical motifs or the lives of ordinary people in his art. The artist’s commitment to portraying the human figure, particularly in relation to their social environment, invites us to consider the identities and experiences of those often unseen or marginalized in society. It’s about giving visibility and dignity to those who are often overlooked.
