This is Bela Czobel’s 1942 painting, Női Fej, and it’s all about color. Look at the juicy reds, soft whites, and cool blues that swirl around to create the face of a woman. You can almost feel the artist working, layering colors to bring her into being. I bet he was thinking about the relationship between color and emotion, and how the colors interact to convey a mood. The surface of the painting seems soft and the paint looks thin. The brushstrokes are delicate, almost caressing the canvas. I love the confident strokes that give her features definition, like around the eyes and mouth. I wonder if Czobel saw the colors and contours in his mind before applying them to the canvas. For me, the work resonates with that of other expressionist painters who prioritize inner emotion. We’re all in conversation, really. Paintings like this remind us that art isn’t about perfection, but about feeling, expression, and an ongoing exploration of the human condition.
