Curator: Ah, “Terrace at Monte Carlo” by Sir Gerald Kelly. It's housed here at the Tate, a small oil on board. What do you make of it? Editor: It's deliciously moody, almost a nocturne. All blues and grays, like a memory half-recalled. Curator: Kelly really captures the fleeting atmosphere, doesn't he? Look at the way he renders the figures—just quick daubs of paint. They're present, yet anonymous. Editor: Yes, and the composition! The horizontal lines of the terrace and the water create a sense of calm, while the vertical lampposts add a touch of elegance. Curator: I find it quietly haunting, a whisper of a glamorous evening. Editor: Indeed, a perfectly captured moment in time, skillfully rendered.

Kelly was at Monte Carlo in January and February 1908, and while he was there painted a number of small panels directly out of doors. Gallery label, August 2004
