Portret van een zittende baby

Curatorial notes
Eduard Naumann captured this portrait of a seated baby in a photograph of modest dimensions. The child sits, almost enthroned, upon a cushion, with bare feet peeking from beneath an elaborate lace-trimmed dress. This curious detail, the bare feet, evokes a sense of vulnerability juxtaposed with the formality of the setting. One might recall the Infant Jesus depicted barefoot in Renaissance paintings, symbolizing innocence and divine purity. Yet, here, in the stark reality of a photographic portrait, the bare feet may suggest something more primal—a connection to the earth, a reminder of our corporeal existence. This image is a poignant confrontation with the cycle of life, the fleeting nature of innocence, and the enduring power of visual symbols to evoke a profound emotional response. Like a dream, it resurfaces, evolving, taking on new meanings in different contexts.
