Anton Prinner, born in Hungary in 1902, created “The Rising Sun”, likely in the mid-20th century, using bronze. Prinner, a Jewish-Hungarian artist, navigated a life deeply impacted by political and social turmoil; the two World Wars and the Holocaust. Here, Prinner uses the image of the sun, often associated with life and energy, yet the figure is presented in a fragmented form, rising from a prostrate position. Notice how this challenges traditional representations of power and resilience. The face of the sun bears a somber, almost pained expression, its geometric eyes suggesting a sense of anguish or perhaps a detached observation of human suffering. This work echoes Prinner's personal experience with persecution and displacement. “The Rising Sun” transcends mere representation, it becomes a profound meditation on survival and the human spirit’s capacity to rise, even when scarred by history.
