Curatorial notes

Antonio Tempesta created this engraving of ‘De heilige Johannes’, or Saint John, sometime between 1570 and 1630. The image captures Saint John’s traditional association with divine inspiration and prophecy. In the piece, John is shown with his symbolic animal, the eagle, a symbol associated with his ability to look directly at the face of God. Tempesta, an Italian artist working in the late Renaissance and early Baroque style, was known for his dynamic and often dramatic compositions. The figures in the background allude to Saint John's apocalyptic visions. The halo and idealized features of Saint John reflect the religious and cultural norms of the period. Engravings like these played a vital role in disseminating religious stories and moral lessons to a wide audience. The relatively small size of the engraving allowed for mass production, and circulation at a time when access to religious texts was limited for many.
