Vincenzo Irolli painted this scene of a chamber orchestra with oils on canvas. I say this because his style of painting reflects a period of art history called Realism, where artists tried to capture the true likeness of a given subject in a realistic manner. Irolli used traditional oil paints and painting techniques to construct the scene before us. Note how he constructed the room's composition using linear perspective, and how he added detail to the room's occupants. As you can see, Irolli's process is extremely labor intensive, from preparing the canvas for painting, to carefully capturing the details and colors of each member of the orchestra. These visual aspects of Irolli's work, as well as the subjects that he chose to paint, indicate that he was part of the late 19th century's artistic and cultural world. This period saw rapid industrialization and the rise of modern capitalism. Irolli's paintings demonstrate the impact of these shifts on the art world, where traditional notions of beauty and skill were being challenged by new forms of creative expression.
