This photograph of the Patio del Ciprés de la Sultana in the Alhambra, Granada, Spain was captured by C Maufsaise with a camera obscura at an unknown date. Looking at this sepia image, it’s easy to get lost in the interplay of light and shadow, especially how it defines the forms of the trees and the architectural details. It's a dance between clarity and obscurity. The way the light dapples through the leaves, creating these soft, blurred edges, it almost feels like the scene is breathing. You can almost feel the stillness of the garden but also the energy of the sunlight. It reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter’s blurred paintings, where the act of obscuring detail actually invites a deeper, more emotional engagement. It’s not about seeing everything clearly, but about feeling the atmosphere. Photography, like painting, is all about how we see, and perhaps, more importantly, how we feel about what we see.
