This is a landscape drawing made with pen and brush in gray ink, currently held at the Rijksmuseum. Though the artist is unknown, the scene reveals a great deal about the relationship between the Dutch and their environment. We see here an image of a woodland, with a dramatic incident of a runaway horse-drawn carriage and a shooting man. The work presents an intriguing tension between the untamed wilderness and human activity. It speaks to the Dutch mastery over nature and also to its vulnerability. The depiction of the forest reflects a cultural fascination with nature, typical of landscape art during this period. The inclusion of a ‘schutter’ or shooter is a reflection of the civic militias in Dutch society, whose existence was bound up with the political institutions of the time. To truly understand art like this, we look to historical records, literature, and period documents. Only then can we understand the work as a product of its time. We come to see it as a reflection of Dutch society's values, concerns, and its ever-evolving relationship with the land.
