Eduardo Arroyo offers us a monochromatic figure in his "Fiancée électrique" that feels both modern and ancient. I can imagine Arroyo carefully applying ink to the plate, considering how each mark will translate when pressed onto paper. The grainy texture of the dark background gives the figure a ghostly presence, and the sharp, contrasting lines create a sense of playful unease. The swirls that make up her hair and breasts feel like electrical currents or maybe even springs ready to pop! This print reminds me of Dada collages—the way that disparate images like the tie and the female form can be brought together, forcing us to ask questions about the relationships between them. The flat planes of color, the graphic quality of the lines, and the simplified forms all contribute to a sense of bold experimentation. It's as if Arroyo is in conversation with all the printmakers who came before, using their techniques to forge his own visual language.
