About this artwork

Pietro Dandini sketched this ceiling decoration with pen and brown ink, envisioning Neptune and allegories of the four continents. Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, emerges as a commanding figure, his presence a symbolic link to dominion over the waters. Allegorical figures representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and America surround him, each laden with culturally specific attributes. Europe may appear with a horse, symbolizing nobility; Asia with spices, signifying wealth; Africa with a lion, denoting untamed nature; and America with an alligator, representing the exotic. We find an echo of this in the Ghent Altarpiece, where similar conventions denote the known world. The recurring motif of continents paying tribute to a central figure, often associated with power, highlights an emotional undercurrent, a yearning for order and control. This image acts as a cultural touchstone, a potent symbol engaging our subconscious and reminding us of the cyclical nature of power and its representation throughout history.
