Franz von Stuck made this painting, Der Nibelungen, and right away, I’m drawn to his bravura brushstrokes. It feels like he’s wrestling with the paint, not just applying it. There's this sense of immediacy, as though the scene is unfolding right before our eyes. The texture! It’s thick and juicy in places, especially in that fiery red background, but also thin and transparent around the figures, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. Look at the figures at the bottom of the painting. They're rendered with quick, gestural marks, capturing their anguish and desperation. This connects the work to Munch, perhaps, but with added drama. In the end, art isn’t about answers, it’s about questions. It's about embracing the messy, contradictory nature of human experience.
