This simple pencil sketch, Figuren bij een kar, by Cornelis Vreedenburgh, feels like a fleeting thought, a momentary capture of figures with a cart. The lines are sparse, almost hesitant, searching for the form rather than declaring it. There's a real sense of the artist grappling with space and volume. Look at how the wheels of the cart are rendered, not as perfect circles, but as wobbly, hand-drawn approximations. This imperfection is what gives the piece its charm. It reveals the artist's process, the act of seeing and translating onto paper. Then there's the strange, almost scribbled out area at the top which suggests the presence of figures looming over the scene, their faces obscured by shadow. Vreedenburgh’s drawing reminds me of the raw, expressive sketches of Cy Twombly. Both artists embrace the unfinished, inviting us to participate in the act of creation. Art isn’t about answers. It’s more about the questions we ask ourselves, about the world and our place within it.
