Damiano Pernati made this etching, titled Handwerkende Vrouwen, in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. It depicts a domestic scene of women engaged in needlework. The image offers a window into the gendered division of labor during this period in Europe. Needlework was a common occupation for women, particularly those of the working class, and was often a vital source of income for families. But note how the image is framed as a "conversazione famigliare", implying the presence of kinship and familiarity in the image. The women pictured are not simply laborers but also mothers, daughters, and sisters. This engraving, then, blurs the line between the public role of labor and the private sphere of the home.
