Curatorial notes

This is "Old Man with a Bottle and a Glass (variant A)" a small print made by Jan van der Bruggen around the turn of the 18th century. The composition is immediately striking. We see two men emerging from a muted background, their faces lit with what seems like internal glee. Notice the careful construction of light and shadow. The artist uses chiaroscuro to model forms, giving a sense of volume and depth. The contrasting tones draw our eyes to the faces, capturing their shared amusement. The texture is rendered with fine lines, creating a tactile quality that invites us closer. Bruggen uses a limited palette to create a sense of intimacy and connection between the figures. The semiotic system at play here hints at themes of companionship, indulgence, and perhaps even the transgressive pleasure found in the company of others. It suggests a world where established values are playfully destabilized, replaced by shared moments of simple joy.
