Norbert Goeneutte’s etching depicts Henri Guérard absorbed in examining a portfolio of prints. The posture itself is a potent symbol—the bended back, the focused gaze—it speaks to a deep engagement with the artistic past. Consider this posture, how it echoes through time. Think of scholars hunched over ancient texts, or monks illuminating manuscripts. It’s a gesture of reverence, of delving into the wisdom of ages. The portfolio is not merely a collection of images, it is a vessel carrying the memories and aspirations of generations. As Guérard pores over each print, he's engaging in a dialogue with the artists of the past, channeling their creative energy into the present. This act of consultation, laden with historical and emotional weight, highlights the cyclical nature of artistic inspiration and its profound connection to the human psyche.

Norbert Goeneutte (1854–1894) studied under Isadore Pils and Henri Lehmann, but soon became tired of formal training and moved to Montmartre. There he became friends with Auguste Renoir and Marcellin Desboutin who sparked Goeneutte’s lifelong interest in printmaking. Goeneutte first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1876, and was an annual exhibitor there until his death from tuberculosis in 1894 at age 40. The graphic arts were a significant aspect of his career and his oeuvre includes some 150 etchings, drypoints and lithographs.
