Andy Warhol made this Dollar Sign, we don’t know exactly when, with simple black lines on what seems like a white surface. It's like a drawing but there are aspects to the line that give it a painterly feel. Look closely, and you will see how the lines that make up the dollar sign aren't perfect. The shape has been built out of many individual lines which each capture the speed and dynamism of Warhol’s hand. This is most obvious where the solid black becomes little hatching marks on the left side of the ‘S’ shape. The beauty of this piece lies in the simplicity and directness of the mark making. I am reminded of Cy Twombly in the rawness of the line. It reflects the idea that art is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time. Ultimately, art is a form that embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
