Joseph Wilton made this study using pen and brown ink, likely in preparation for a larger sculptural project. Wilton was a successful sculptor in 18th-century Britain, known for his marble monuments and architectural decorations. The drawing gives us a glimpse into his process. Pen and ink allowed Wilton to quickly explore ideas, capturing the dynamism of angels and the symbolic bull of St. Luke. Notice how the fluidity of the ink creates a sense of movement. The layered strokes build up volume and texture, particularly in the swirling clouds. Wilton's skill is evident in his control of line and tone, achieving a sculptural quality on paper. While seemingly simple, this drawing represents a significant amount of artistic labor. It connects to a broader history of skilled craftsmanship and the central role of drawing in artistic production. Appreciating the making of this artwork allows us to consider the creative process and the artist's hand.
