Curatorial notes

Jan Veth rendered this watercolor image of an old woman with a headscarf and red scarf at an unknown date. The headscarf, a symbol of modesty and piety, carries echoes of the veils worn by women throughout history, from religious figures to humble peasants. Think of the Virgin Mary, often depicted with her head covered, embodying purity and grace. Here, though, the scarf takes on a different nuance. It is not necessarily religious, but rather a sign of age and social status. The woman's bowed head, framed by the soft fabric, evokes a sense of introspection. The scarf almost becomes a shroud, a symbol of the inevitable decline and mortality that haunts us all. The choice of red for the scarf is striking. Red, the color of life, passion, and sacrifice, adds a layer of complexity to the image. Is it a last vestige of vitality, a flicker of warmth against the fading light? Such symbolism is not linear; it resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings across time.
