Siegfried Zademack’s painting, "Auf dem Weg" is made with a traditional approach to mark making, an approach that uses the medium to create a portal into a dream-like psychological space. Zademack constructs a scene with a figure standing in a boat with the sun shining from where his head would be. The paint is smooth, and it seems to glow from within, almost like an early Renaissance painting. The marks are concealed to show off the world that is revealed, but if you look closely you can see a soft layering of tones. This is especially visible in the build-up of paint that is used to create the sky. I’m reminded of Caspar David Friedrich, in the way that both artists create allegorical figures that evoke a sense of wonder, and maybe even a little fear. It’s art as a form that embraces questions rather than answers, inviting you to find your own way.
