"The Rape of Proserpina" is a large tapestry, woven at the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins. Visually, the composition is split into two distinct zones: an earthly, pastoral scene and a more turbulent, mythological realm above. The tapestry's surface is rich with detail, using a muted palette to create depth and texture. The piece presents a classical scene framed by structured artistic principles. The dramatic diagonal from Pluto's forceful abduction down to the fleeing nymphs organizes the composition, conveying both motion and disruption. The figures’ poses and the soft gradations of colour, typical of the Gobelins style, lend a theatrical air. Yet, this formal elegance undercuts the violent narrative. This tapestry doesn't merely depict a mythological event; it engages with contemporary debates about power, desire, and representation. The tapestry invites viewers to consider how artistic forms can simultaneously convey beauty and complexity. It presents a rich site for ongoing interpretation and reinterpretation."
