This small object, titled "Steeltje van de Stichting Diamantbewerkers Koperen Stelen Fonds", was made by the Copper Stems Fund of the Diamond Workers Foundation. It looks like it was made with copper, amongst other materials. What caught my eye is how the different parts of the object appear to have been formed with a range of processes, like they have been added or grown together. The object has a certain bluntness, it’s solid, it has weight. The gray part is like a rough stone and the gold a smoother skin. The seam between them is really noticeable and looks like the different materials have been pressed together. Look closely at the stem, how linear and smooth it is in comparison. It reminds me of something Brâncuși might have made, he worked with similar forms. This object embraces ambiguity, inviting us to contemplate its purpose and creation.
