This painting of a house in Cagnes, maybe made with oils, feels like a fleeting moment captured with warmth. I wonder, was Renoir thinking about the way light softens edges when he made this? The whole scene is built from soft, broken marks and an earthy palette. I imagine him squinting at the scene, the colors dissolving together, just like my own eyesight these days. You can almost feel the sun beating down on the ochre walls. There's a beautiful looseness here. It feels like Renoir is less interested in the precise details of the architecture and more absorbed with the feeling of being there. It's a gentle, joyful record of a place. And I bet other painters will look at it one day and feel inspired to pick up their own brushes and join the conversation.
