Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan made this drawing, Resting Herdsman, using ink on paper, and what strikes me is the real sense of movement he creates with such simple means. Look at how the ink is laid down; it’s almost brutal in its directness. Thick, thin, short, long – each mark feels like an immediate response. The artist uses line to define the figures and the landscape, but it’s also about the spaces in between. The way the light filters through the branches, or how the mountains are just these stark, dark forms in the background. I can see, especially in the mountains, how some of the strokes are laid down vertically, one beside the other, like short, sharp exhales. And even though it's just black ink on paper, the drawing doesn't feel flat. It has depth and atmosphere, almost like an abstract expressionist painting but with cows. Weisz-Kubínčan reminds me of Emil Nolde; they both have this raw, expressive quality. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection; it’s about the energy and the feeling you put into it.
