Mariano Fortuny Marsal created this drawing "Saint Paul preaching before the areopagus". The composition is structured around a division of space and ideology. On the left, we see symbols of classical antiquity which fade into indistinct forms. This creates a sense of depth and immateriality. In contrast, on the right, Saint Paul stands as a clearly defined figure amidst a more structured and shadowed space. His presence and gesture command the scene, drawing our focus to the act of preaching. The contrast in lighting and spatial treatment suggests a deliberate attempt to differentiate between the old world and the new faith. The overall visual experience is one of transition from a world of pagan mystery to one of Christian revelation. It's a carefully constructed visual and symbolic argument.
