Curator: Here we have Ralph Rumney’s large oil on canvas, "The Change," from the Tate Collections. Editor: My immediate reaction is controlled chaos. It feels both exciting and unsettling. Curator: Note the layering of primary colours. The composition hinges on how these blocks of red, yellow, and blue interact with the black lines. Rumney balances dynamism with order. Editor: It’s almost as though the painting mirrors social upheaval. The title, "The Change," paired with this fragmented style, suggests a world constantly being reshaped, maybe even contested. Curator: Perhaps. Or consider how the surface texture itself conveys meaning, how the materiality contributes to its aesthetic power. Editor: I appreciate the close visual analysis, but, for me, the work speaks of a broader narrative—about shifting power structures and the artist’s place within that change. Curator: It’s a fascinating point, one that adds layers to our understanding of the work. Editor: Yes, a painting that invites us to consider the tensions between the personal and political.

From the 1950s onwards Ralph Rumney was involved with a number of different European avant-garde movements. In July 1957 he co-founded the Situationist International, an anarchist group that sought to overthrow capitalism through subversive cultural acts. The Change, painted early in 1957, is constructed from randomly applied dabs of paint and a loose grid of black lines. The combination of chance marks and the ordering device of a grid has been interpreted as a visual metaphor for the interaction of the subconscious and conscious, as well as the spiritual and material.
