Editor: This is a detail from Matthias Grünewald's Heller Altarpiece, painted in 1511 using oil paint. The detail depicts the head of a female figure. What strikes me is the rendering of the hair, it feels so textural, so deliberate. What do you see in this piece from a formalist perspective? Curator: The rendering of the hair is indeed remarkable. Note how Grünewald uses contrasting values to define individual strands, creating a complex interplay of light and shadow. The monochromatic palette also focuses our attention on the compositional elements, the arrangement of forms, and the textures present. The flowing lines of the hair contrast sharply with the smoother, more subdued rendering of the face. This contrast guides our eye across the composition, establishing a visual hierarchy. How does the artist use of line contribute to the overall effect of the work? Editor: I see how the lines of her hair lead you across the frame! And how that is different to the smooth face! Almost like the lines create movement in a still image. Curator: Precisely. Moreover, observe how the directionality of the lines also suggests an emotional state: almost ethereal. This technique is not unique to Grünewald; it is rooted in earlier artistic traditions. Also notice the planes. How do these flat planes create a composition for us, the viewers? Editor: The flat planes make it seem modern almost, even though it's so old. Curator: Yes. By suppressing volume in certain areas, the artist accentuates other areas and draws attention to the flatness of the picture plane itself. In its construction and rendering it provides not only insight into historical methods but modern ideas. Editor: Thinking about it, I am starting to see what can be learned from composition of a work. Thank you. Curator: My pleasure, visual and conceptual aspects enhance each other, deepening the aesthetic experience.
