Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing called 'Vrouw met een hoed' at an unknown date on a piece of paper. The simplicity is what gets me, you know? The artist just went for it with those bold, confident lines describing the woman's figure. I can almost see him working, quickly capturing the essence of the subject, editing and refining with each stroke. There’s a realness to this sketch. I imagine Cachet was more interested in conveying a feeling, an impression, rather than a literal representation. The woman's hat is so present and stylized it becomes the focal point of the drawing, a bold visual statement. It reminds me of other artists who were also trying to see and show the world in new ways. It's all one big conversation, isn't it?
