Jan Baptist Weenix painted this canvas, Monument at a Harbour, in the Dutch Republic during the mid-17th century. It depicts an idealised vision of a Mediterranean port, filled with classical architecture and symbols of wealth and power. The monumental setting contrasts sharply with the figures in the foreground. While wealthy merchants stroll through the harbour, the abject poor lie at its edge. This juxtaposition points to the social inequalities that accompanied the burgeoning Dutch mercantile empire. Weenix was part of a generation of artists who traveled to Italy to study classical forms, but then returned to the Netherlands to apply these to distinctly Dutch subjects. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam holds a wealth of information about the Dutch Golden Age. By studying archival documents we gain insight into how artists negotiated the demands of the market, and how their work reflected the social and political realities of their time.
