This disrupted space speaks volumes about the protagonist's fall. Editor: The fireplace does seem to draw the eye. Curator: And consider the figures themselves. What does the act of the boy stealing the watch from over the fireplace and other items strewn across the ground signal? What larger societal commentary might Hogarth be weaving through these symbols? Look carefully: A doctor attending to the prostrate woman, servants in disarray, violence from the gentleman to the left. It speaks to me of lost innocence, disease, betrayal, of social and moral decay, a story of consequence, that played out for a moralizing London audience.
