The Muse 1887

Henri Fantin-Latour created "The Muse" using etching. The composition sets up a compelling dialogue between the tangible and the ethereal, the real and the ideal. The eye is drawn to the stark contrast between the dark, solid figure of the artist and the luminous, spectral muse behind him. Latour uses line and shadow to create depth and to distinguish the muse from the man.
