Thiago Boecan made this painting called Beast 6 with what looks like a lot of dark paint, and then, almost as an afterthought, a pale almost teal white. There’s something ghostly about it. I like how the paint seems to both build up and drip down, a kind of push-and-pull between intention and accident. That drip, coming right down from the geometric form, it could almost be crying. The form itself is strange; hard-edged, almost architectural. Except it’s transparent, so the darkness bleeds through. That kind of ambiguity is so important to me. Is it a beast or a building? Is it solid or spectral? I’m reminded of some of Louise Bourgeois’ darker works, where the emotional intensity comes from this same kind of murkiness. Art isn’t about answers, it’s about questions.
