Cornelis Cort created this engraving, "Holy Family with Elizabeth and John the Baptist," around the 16th century. During the Counter-Reformation, there was a push towards more humanistic and relatable depictions of biblical figures, as the Catholic Church tried to reconnect with believers. Here, we see Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, and the infants Jesus and John together in an intimate domestic scene. Mary sits calmly, a picture of maternal serenity, while Elizabeth playfully holds the infant Jesus. Note the contrast between Mary's composed demeanor and Elizabeth's active engagement, subtly highlighting different aspects of womanhood and motherhood. The everyday details—the fruit on the table, the textile craft—ground the holy figures in a tangible reality. The print invites us to consider the humanity of these iconic figures, forging a personal connection that transcends religious doctrine. It is in that intersection of the divine and the domestic that this work finds its emotional resonance, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of those at the heart of the Christian faith.
