Editor: This is Roger Fry's "Landscape with Shepherd, near Villa Madama, Rome". I’m immediately drawn to the composition, especially the way the water reflects the landscape. What strikes you most about its formal qualities? Curator: The painting’s strength lies in its structural integrity. Observe how Fry employs a limited palette, predominantly earthy tones, to unify the composition. The horizontal bands of the landscape create a sense of depth. Editor: I noticed the repetition of vertical lines in the trees and the shepherd’s staff. Curator: Precisely. The interplay of these verticals against the horizontals provides a compelling visual rhythm. Does that enhance your understanding? Editor: It does. I see how the formal elements create a harmonious, balanced effect now. Thank you. Curator: Indeed, by examining these elements, we gain a richer appreciation of the artist’s intent.

Roger Fry painted this landscape during his first trip to Italy. He described progress on the picture in a letter to a friend: ‘I’m doing a lovely thing near the Villa Madama, really it’s going to be rather good, a row of bare trees bright red in the afternoon sun and behind the appennines and the blue sky and in front a pool and sheep and a shepherd’. Fry added that while working he was distracted by the sound of frogs, but that he enjoyed the company of a ‘dear little green lizard’. Gallery label, March 2025
