Kimon Loghi painted this oil on canvas titled ‘Mythological Scene,’ though we don’t know exactly when. The turn of the twentieth century was a moment of intense national self-definition in many parts of Europe. We can view this landscape, with its figures in classical dress, in relation to debates about Greek identity. The image presents an idealised and timeless image of the nation. The rural setting evokes a sense of connection to the land and its history, and the mythological figures suggest a link to the ancient past. Loghi was associated with the Munich Secession, a group of artists who broke away from the mainstream art establishment in Germany. This helps us understand his place within a network of modern artists who were looking for new ways to express themselves, outside of the established Academy system. Historians of art can help us to understand the painting better through archival research into the artist's life, influences, and the cultural context in which he was working. This artwork invites us to consider the role of art in constructing and reinforcing national identities.
