Sylvia Dezon made this drawing of a corset using pencil on paper sometime in the mid-20th century. I can imagine Sylvia at her drawing desk, sketching and calculating, maybe thinking about who would wear this thing. It's got these delicate lines and an almost floral pattern, with names or words woven in. Look at the little hearts! You know, painting and fashion design aren't so different. Both are about shaping, constructing, and adorning. You use lines, forms, and colors to create something that wasn’t there before. There’s something tender about the back laces. And look at the way it cinches at the waist – you can almost feel the tension and release. Dezon must have been aware of the body, its possibilities, and its constraints. I wonder if she was inspired by other designers or artists, picking up on ideas and transforming them into something new. We’re all remixing, adding our own spin to what came before.
