Editor: So, this is Giuseppe Cunego’s "Italian Landscape I," currently held in the Harvard Art Museums. It’s an interesting scene, quite detailed, and the figures are almost like an afterthought. What stands out to you about it? Curator: Considering Cunego's profession as a printmaker, I find myself drawn to the labor involved. This wasn't simply about artistic expression; it was about a specific process. How does the act of reproduction shape the consumption and understanding of these landscapes? Editor: That’s a good point! I was so focused on the image itself. Curator: The etching process itself, the tools used, and the paper chosen – these material aspects determine the accessibility and dissemination of the image. Thinking about how these prints were made for a growing market, eager for views of the picturesque, really changes my perspective. Editor: I’ve never thought about it that way. I’ll definitely be thinking more about the production process from now on.
