'Les grenouilles sortent de la guele de la Bête, du Dragon et de la bouche du Faux Prophète. Apoc. XVI’ was made in 1050 by Facundus with opaque watercolor on parchment. The animals are rendered through labor-intensive processes of layering paint, building up forms with precision and care. Their texture and substance, captured with such dedication, underscore the spiritual significance of the image. Consider the vibrant palette, achieved through the patient application of pigments – perhaps derived from minerals and plants – and the fine parchment support. The act of creation was more than just a skillful arrangement of color, it was an act of devotion. The use of expensive materials, such as parchment, and the painstaking process of applying pigments, would have been available only to wealthy patrons and skilled monastic workshops. The image's inherent worth, built on the values of craftsmanship, is a reflection of hierarchical social structures. In essence, the artwork embodies a fusion of material, labor, and context, and challenges the traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
