Here we have Lee Krasner’s ‘Free Space (Deluxe), yellow’, a print of some kind. I love the way she’s not trying to hide the process; you can almost see the tools she used, maybe a squeegee? There is a real physicality to this piece. I’m drawn to the yellow shapes with those expressive marks inside, kind of chaotic, like a scribble, but controlled. The brushstrokes are so visible, you can practically feel the artist’s hand moving across the surface. Notice how some strokes are thick and bold, while others are thin and delicate. It's like she’s exploring the push and pull of intention and chance. Krasner’s dialogue with painting extends through to artists like Cecily Brown, who also let the materiality of paint speak so loudly.
