Fritz Syberg made this drawing, with pen and watercolour on paper. I can almost see Syberg outside, sketching fast, trying to capture the way the bare trees reach up to the sky. It looks like he's using hatching lines to add depth and shadow, building up this whole atmosphere in blacks, browns and blues. It must have been hard to do that out in the cold. I wonder if he warmed his hands up after? The textures are great, aren't they? Especially the way the lines curve and tangle to make those dense crowns on the trees. It feels like I can see right into his mind, feeling how he felt that day. The guy walking along looks like he doesn't feel it at all. For me, the way the lines just keep going, never quite stopping or settling, shows how artists keep exploring and playing with ideas, you know? They are forever in conversation with each other, like a never ending game of telephone, each one inspired by the one before.
