Editor: This is a Sestertius of Faustina II, currently held at the Harvard Art Museums. The wear and patina give it such a tactile presence. What strikes you most about its formal qualities? Curator: I'm immediately drawn to the circular composition, bisected by the profiles on each face. The artist's choice of a low relief results in a subtle play of light and shadow. Editor: I see that now! The artist really utilized the material's properties to create depth, despite the shallow carving. Curator: Precisely. The patina itself functions as an abstract painting, obscuring and revealing the intended forms, transforming the coin into something more than just currency. It becomes an object of contemplation. The textures are incredible! Editor: I agree, seeing the texture emphasized shifts my perspective completely. Thanks!
