Curatorial notes
Camille Pissarro created this painting of agricultural labour with oil on canvas. The image celebrates rural life, but it's more than just a pretty picture. It's an intervention in the art world of late 19th-century France. Painted in the region of Eragny, this work uses pointillist techniques to capture the play of light on the field. Pissarro was drawn to the French countryside, and the values of agrarian life. Yet his interest was not only aesthetic; it also spoke to his anarchist political beliefs. The art establishment favoured historical and allegorical subjects, but Pissarro and his contemporaries saw beauty and significance in everyday scenes. They wanted to legitimize those subjects. We can see the image as a kind of social commentary, elevating the work of ordinary people. This painting is now in a private collection, but it originally would have been shown in independent exhibitions organized by the artists themselves. To fully appreciate this artwork, one needs to delve into the history of 19th-century French painting, the politics of the Impressionist movement, and even anarchist thought of the period.
